Question on Africa and Bitcoin

Africa is one of the largest mobile markets. 1.2 billion people and most don't have a computer but over 80% do have a cellphone.
I'm curious just how many wallets work for older phones in terms of still having good security. AND is there anyway to tell if Africa is getting the Bitcoin/crypto bug?

The Sun Exchange raises $3M for crypto driven solar power in Africa

South Africa based renewable energy startup Sun Exchange has raised $3 million to close its Series A funding round totaling $4 million.
The company operates a peer-to-peer, crypto enabled business that allows individuals anywhere in the world to invest in solar infrastructure in Africa.
How’s that all work?
“You as an individual are selling electricity to a school in South Africa, via a solar panel you bought through the Sun Exchange,” explained Abe Cambridge — the startup’s founder and CEO.
“Our platform meters the electricity production of your solar panel. Arranges for the purchasing of that electricity with your chosen energy consumer, collects that money and then returns it to your Sun Exchange wallet.”
It costs roughly $5 a panel to get in and transactions occur in South African Rand or Bitcoin.
“The reason why we chose Bitcoin is we needed one universal payment system that enables micro transactions down to a millionth of a U.S. cent,” Cambridge told TechCrunch on a call.
He co-founded the Cape Town headquartered startup in 2015 to advance renewable energy infrastructure in Africa. “I realized the opportunity for solar was enormous, not just for South Africa, but for the whole of the African continent,” said Cambridge.
“What was required was a new mechanism to get Africa solar powered.”
Sub-Saharan Africa has a population of roughly 1 billion people across a massive landmass and only about half of that population has access to electricity, according to the International Energy Agency.
Recently, Sun Exchange’s main market South Africa — which boasts some of the best infrastructure in the region — has suffered from blackouts and power outages.
Sun Exchange has 17,000 members in 162 countries who have invested in solar power projects for schools, businesses and organizations throughout South Africa, according to company data.
The $3 million — which closed Sun Exchange’s $4 million Series A — came from the Africa Renewable Power Fund of London’s ARCH Emerging Markets Partners.
With the capital the startup plans to enter new markets. “We’re going to expand into other Sub-Saharan African countries. We’ve got some clear opportunities on our roadmap,” Cambridge said, referencing Nigeria as one of the markets Sun Exchange has researched.
There are several well-funded solar energy startups operating in Africa’s top economic and tech hubs, such as Kenya and Nigeria. In East Africa, M-Kopa sells solar hardware kits to households on credit then allows installment payments via mobile phone using M-Pesa mobile money. The venture is is backed by $161 million from investors including Steve Case and Richard Branson.
In Nigeria, Rensource shifted from a residential hardware model to building solar-powered micro utilities for large markets and other commercial structures.
Nigeria’s Rensource raises $20M to power African markets by solar
Sun Exchange operates as an asset free model and operates differently than companies that install or manufacture solar panels.
“We’re completely supplier agnostic. We are approached by solar installers who operate on the African continent. And then we partner with the best ones,” said Cambridge — who presented the startup’s model at TechCrunch Startup Battlefield in Berlin in 2017.
“We’re the marketplace that connects together the user of the solar panel to the owner of the solar panel to the installer of the solar panel.”
Abe Cambridge, Image Credits: TechCrunch
Sun Exchange generates revenues by earning margins on sales of solar panels and fees on purchases and kilowatt hours generated, according to Cambridge.
In addition to expanding in Africa, the startup looks to expand in the medium to long-term to Latin America and Southeast Asia.
“Those are also places that would really benefit from from solar energy, from the speed in which it could be deployed and the environmental improvements that going solar leads to,” said Cambridge.

Amazing news you might have missed (partnerships, new tools, new relationships)

I wanted to make this post right now when moral is (once again) at a low point. NANO is such a coin that is amazing and has an amazing community, yet it has to pass through many trials and tribulations to prove its own worth. Still NANO and the NANO FOUNDATION keeps on chugging, overcome each obstacle while only getting better. Yet the battle hasnt been won yet and we might face yet another dry season before rain season starts to happen.

A lot of you are well aware of the upcoming technical updates (V19 and V20) as this usually is the main focus of both the foundation and this sub. Because of that and the whole LIBRA annoucement overwelming the community at large, the latest news on business opportunities, new relationships and even partherships that brings direct exposure to the (targeted) public have been overlooked. All of this has been talked about in the weekly update (this medium post).

Now a quick note here (and a small jab to the community manager too) is that almost zero hype has been created from all of these GREAT news. If it was any other coin, even 1/10 of all these great changes would have been enough to cover the frontpage of CC and talked about in various blogposts/vlogs etc. We are talking about several Universities here that can have the option to use nano to pay for their lunch/coffee. That alone is HUGE and can be a great real life adoption as universities are places that usually are more friendlier towards innovation.

Lets dissect the weekly post a bit more and follow the links up to see what the announcements really mean. In the light of focussing mainly on business orientated news (partnerships, exposure, new relationships etc.), some things ofc will be skipped:

Interview Financial Times
First what is mentioned is the interview of Colin with financial times currency correspondent Eva Szalay. Here is her page on the official website of the Financial Times UK: https://www.ft.com/stream/ff54f58c-6708-45fa-8c26-5b5baa7eb794
Now i cant find the interview yet, so i take it hasnt been published yet. Still, if this happens, it would mean great exposure as the FT is seen as a credible source of news. This would expose NANO to real investors alone.

WIREX
Afterwards, the CEO of WIREX spoke:
Wirex CEO Pavel Mateev took to the stage afterward to discuss some of the challenges his company has faced in working to bridge the gap between cryptocurrency and traditional fiat currencies over the last five years. Pavel also took some time to outline Wirex’s intent to expand its services beyond Europe — to North America, Asia, and even Africa.

The fact that Wirex, which also have adopted NANO, speaks at a NANO conference already speaks of measures. Wirex on that note alone can be seen as a 'partner' of NANO, i.e. one of NANO's partnerships. Its interesting to note Wirex also intends to expand in to Africa.
For those who dont know what Wirex is, its a creditcard where you pay with crypto (and it says its accepted everywhere were visa is accepted too): https://wirexapp.com/ Within that context, NANO can already be used to buy regular things with through a creditcard from Wirex. This is yet another step for mainstream adoption.

Kappture
Still these are small things to consider (even though they do start to stack up!), the biggest announcement must be the partnership/adoption from Kappture:
Cutting-edge electronic point-of-sale device company, Kappture, presented their alpha integration of Nano into its merchant devices. The integration will mark the forward-thinking company’s first venture into offering users the opportunity to pay with cryptocurrency. With highly regarded institutions such as Saïd Business School and the University of West London among the users of the EPoS system, this integration will represent a significant step forward in the discovery of natural use cases of secure and decentralized cryptocurrency — with the ultrafast and fee-less transactions of Nano leading the way.

This might have been the biggest news of the week if Libra announcement didnt came out. Kappture adoption for NANO means exposure to a WILD range of publics. Please go to Kappture own website and see where there devices are being used. We are talking about:

- The Championships Wimbledon
- Football stadiums
- Opera house
- Cricket
- Rugy
- multiple universities (including Oxford) and business schools
- Several business clients including Peugeot

This is true adoption and major exposure to such a variety of people. These are mainly Europe/London based, which means NANO is set for adoption in the West (Europe). With wirex being a visa card where you can pay with NANO all over the world (as long as they accept visa), Kappture will give you the oppertunity to directly sell your NANO on several events/places through their ePOS system.

If that wasnt enough the FOUNDATION has come with its own ePOS system, that is crypto agnostic (i.o.w. it accepts all crypto) yet still is secure and private:

Appia
The much-anticipated unveiling of the Appia payment ecosystem capped the days' proceedings. Appia is a crypto agnostic service providing, amongst many other things, signed payment requests for strong customer protection. Built on the new Manta protocol, Appia focuses on security, privacy, and multi-channel capability. Appia will help simplify the process of both paying with cryptocurrency as a consumer and accepting it as a merchant.

This is not only amazing news for NANO, this is amazing news for the WHOLE crypto community! If it is cheap to make and easy to setup (targets that can be worked on), it could spread adoption all over the world.

Africa
Colin himself have said that developing countries will also become a business focus for the NANO foundation. Certain African countries already use digital cash called m-pesa and some have already become the first cashless society of earth. Its one of the reasons why Africa is very promising for blockchain currencies (as they can be trustless/permisionless/secure unlike m-pesa). Not only that, with Appia, Wirex and ofc the current (mobile/web) wallets and its tech, NANO FOUNDATION has strong tools for adoption in Africa.

Possible second layer privacy option
Now just think about NANO having a second layer privacy mixer (copying from the BANANO devs), and its hard not to be exited: https://medium.com/banano/introducing-camo-banano-bananos-privacy-layer-98a5bb0ecdb1. The library is already there. It can't be that hard to implement it, though its smart to first wait out and see how it works on BANANO (ironing all the bugs out) before implementing it on NANO. This is a fine example why it is extremely good for NANO to have a fork like BANANO, as it can become a testing ground for new tech (we really should be happy and Co exist/co work with each other in that front in my opinion).

This is part from the BANANO medium post, but its well worth to mention, especially the last part:
First of all, Camo BANANO Phase 1 as described here and available for now allows for confidential transactions, but not for real privacy yet. At the current stage, Camo BANANO is the equivalent of opening 20 BANANO accounts on your BANANO Vault and using all 20 accounts to do transactions, meaning that any person you’d interact with only knows 1/20th of your stack. Camo BANANO allows to make this process easier (as kind of a manual mixer) and thereby in its Phase 1 adds confidentiality to BANANO transactions as proof of concept.
Camo BANANO will, however, be further developed, and Phase 2 of Camo BANANO requires adding a new block type to the BANANO protocol, finally allowing for sum-of-squares private transactions.
Of interest for developers: Also released recently under MIT License and open to use for everyone, for every purpose (though it’s not guaranteed to be suitable for any purpose of course): BANANOjs library with Camo capability V 1.0 (check out the readme for the supported API and camo commands). BANANOjs is a JavaScript library that can be used to convert seeds to public keys, sign blocks, and more. It also has Camo BANANO functions, meaning any developer can send and receive transactions using the Camo BANANO L2 protocol, without doing this manually by using the Camo BANANO website.

These all on their own are worthy of their own medium post and should be talked about in vlogs/blogs etc. And i do wonder, with such wonderful news, why this all has been kept in a short medium post with not that even a lot of claps. These are major announcement yet are being kept quite for some reason. Maybe there is a reason for it though. As Libra has come and Bitcoin is taking off, maybe the marketing crew is abiding their time before dropping these bombs in to the public. Also, like i said, NANO is going to have to endure one last test, one last difficult price depression, before it has the chance to spread it wings.

TLDR:
- Financial times UK interview (exposure to serious investors)
- Wirex being a serious partner of NANO (also, paying with NANO world wide everywhere VISA is accepted!)
- Kappture partnership that includes exposure to several football/cricket/rugby clubs, theaters, universities (including Oxford), and other business (like Peugeot) - with this a good part of the Western/UK demography gets targeted, meaning immense exposure in the UK.
- Appia device, agnostic crypto ePOS to lower the bar accepting crypto in your store World Wide
- Oppertunities in Africa
- Possible second layer mixer for privacy option (through BANANO development)

You are a poor African villager trying to use Bitcoin

I'm trying to get my head around this idea of having Bitcoin be a solution for the unbanked billions as some people have described here. so I'd appreciate it if the proponents of that idea would run through this with me from the perspective of one of these people.
So, hypothetical scenario: You are one of the unbanked poors in a third world country and you are attempting to store some money in Bitcoin and also use it to buy stuff.
You don't have a desktop or laptop PC. You could maybe store your bitcoins on a mobile phone? How sophisticated does the mobile phone have to be for this purpose and is it more or less safe than using a PC? Can you concievably complete all of the necessary steps to make your coins safe without access to a PC?
Realistically, how tech-savvy do you have to be to ensure that your coins are not stolen or lost? You could maybe try and browse the Internet for help using your little mobile screen (if you have a wifi somehow), but you can't read English (you might speak it) or any other common language so you are limited in options to read up on all this. You are not a computer wizzard.
How many mobiles are you going to need in total? One for cold storage, another as backup, another if you actually want to use it for something else?
Thanks.

ORACOL XOR PLATFORM

ORACOL XOR PLATFORM
Oracol Xor platform is designed with three core pillars of development to drive our innovative mission. We arrived at this model by identifying key elements and trends related to cryptocurrency creation, adoption and distribution. The three core pillars are as follows:
1. A solution to facilitating mass adoption at the grassroots level.
Since the inception of Bitcoin, the traditional means of acquiring crypto assets has been through digital exchanges. The procedure has always involved interacting with a bank or financial institution. From here, fiat funds are transferred to the exchange, offering users the opportunity to convert fiat currency in crypto. The process is long, tedious, and requires moderate computer literacy. Recently, efforts have been made to directly connect consumers with point-of-purchase platforms via crypto ATMs located in large metropolitan areas in a few select countries and direct cash purchasing.
However, crypto ATM’s are not a sustainable solution to stimulate mass adoption as long as the machines are dispersed in a restricted area in only developed countries. It is our belief that mass adoption cannot happen while crypto ATM’s remain the only physical means by which everyday consumers are exposed to cryptocurrency. With the lack of technical computer literacy presenting a formidable barrier to access to the public, the adequacy of current solutions to mass adoption are dubious. The idea that everyone ought to carry a public cryptographic key (and guard their private key - otherwise known as a crypto wallet where purchased coins can be deposited) represents a further constraint on mass adoption as these technical concepts remain out of reach for the general public. As long as current crypto infrastructure remains in place, adoption levels will remain stagnant as mid level consumers remain reluctant to proceed with transactions. Nevertheless, relevant to this discussion is the contemporary crypto ATM network, the distribution of these ATM’s globally, and the cryptocurrencies currently contending for adoption. The tables below display ATM distribution by cryptocurrency type and ATM distribution by continent.

https://preview.redd.it/qxa6vrke09z21.png?width=636&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f292b2c2de8462448a6b497021a65a10a83258b

While it is easy to spot the shortcomings of this method, when it comes to mass distribution and usage, it is worth noting that most of the areas with low ATM penetration have strong mobile phone usage. Thus it follows that the use of phone cards is wide spread across these regions. By imitating the mobile phone card distribution model, Oracol Xor will become an instant success, enabling anyone in any part of the world – connected or not – to become a crypto currency holder. Furthermore, through this process the consumer will become part of the Oracol Xor Platform, allowing them to immediately start making mobile payments and purchases using Oracol Xor crypto currency.
• The Oracol Xor solution is as simple as it is common worldwide. We present you our LowTech solution – XOR denominated cards.
Issuance of Oracol Xor denominated cards to be sold in local currencies will be available at local stores worldwide using a distribution/marketing method similar to those of mobile phone cards. This simple but effective solution is as easy to use as a phone card, and once registered (using our data less browser solution for mobile phones) in our Gateway/Exchange the funds are instantly available without the need for any other complex processes. Funds are free to transfer between users of Oracol Gateway/Exchange and are convertible into other crypto currencies via cryptocurrency exchanges everywhere.
• Such distribution networks are easy to model after successful supply chains for phone cards that already exist.
• Finally, our grass roots method leverages decentralized distribution to build brand recognition and network participation worldwide.

https://preview.redd.it/k15ripgo09z21.png?width=372&format=png&auto=webp&s=4ec9d16ed5e4436f36539eb6e98c6a82d4edc895
2 – Develop a proprietary global telecom solution that connects areas with low data coverage to Oracol Xor mobile money.
Due to infrastructural constraints, over 3 billion people use mobile phones without reliable data access in the developing world. As a result, trading or paying with phone credits is common practice. Mobile phone solutions using 2G or 3G networks such as M-Pesa are already a success, representing a unique opportunity. Oracol Xor platform is ready to enter the market as a disruptive technology, and coupled with pillars 1 and 3 is sure to change the existing industry landscape. In 2016 $216 billion dollars were transacted through the mobile payment networks (mobile money) averaging to some 30,000.00 transactions per minute. Below are some stats and industry trends:

https://preview.redd.it/40yufi2u09z21.png?width=591&format=png&auto=webp&s=eb9ae2510ec508aad09294d3189f1292fbafa409
3 – Creating the Oracol Xor Social Network and Online presence
Social Media - No successful platform thrives without a strong social network component, with the most successful examples being Facebook and YouTube. Subscriber count and the number of average daily users across all social networks is currently staggering. However, not a single social network has yet successfully incorporated crypto currency into its ecosystem. One of the main goals of Oracol Xor platform is to develop a social media network that will incorporate the use of XOR cryptocurrency either through monetization or as a form of online payment. Once operational at full capacity the Social Media website will encourage further adoption and create its unique imprint with XOR flavor.
Given current market conditions and the complicated legislation governing most the popular social US-based media companies, Oracol Xor social media platform will locate its servers in a jurisdiction where freedom of the internet is guaranteed. It is confirmed that the number of subscribers to these companies is declining as we speak due to various factors and practices and that currently a veritable “war” for supremacy and the biggest piece of the advertising space pie is being conducted online. Oracol Xor will step in as an independent player without the restrictions that currently are hampering other companies (except the common sense restrictions such a violence, porn etc). As indicated in the statistics below, it is expected that the declining subscription numbers will continue as consumers look for alternative social networks, free from censorship and “throttling” policies. This presents us as a platform, a perfect opportunity to introduce the world to a new and innovative social networking solution that integrates cryptocurrency as a method of payment. Rumors have it that Facebook is working on integrating a possible use of Ethereum but there are no confirmed reports to date.
By pioneering this integration, Oracol Xor social network and platform will establish itself as a major force in the industry through its innovative approach to best practice, paving the way for exponential revenue growth and subscriber count. Additional income from advertisement revenue will consolidate the XOR economy and increase the overall value of the digital asset.
At this time Oracol Xor has already launched its incipient version of the Social Network website and is working towards further developing components that will enhance the use and make it more user friendly.

Stellar Lumens vs Other Cryptocurrencies
Lumens vs. Bitcoin: Jed McCaleb spoke at Distributed Markets in 2017 about the advantages, but more importantly, the disadvantages of Bitcoin. Listen to the talk here. Jed said, “Bitcoin is this awesome innovation. The first thing it does is converts a real world resource, electricity, into a digital asset. So it takes something from the real world and puts it into the digital realm. The second thing it does is provides immutable public record. It’s basically a database that everyone can see but no one change arbitrarily… That’s great, Bitcoin solves the double spin problem [ of proving possession and transmitting volume]… [However, to fix the problems of bitcoin] you might think well maybe we’ll just kind of keep adding [software] to Bitcoin until we get there, but that’s not really the way software works. You want to have the design from the beginning and solve these simple issues. Bitcoin was designed to be a new currency, it wasn’t really designed to be this unifying universal payment network. So that’s what Stellar does. It solves these three remaining issues.”
Lumens vs. Bitcoin #2: According to wired.com, "Bitcoin mining guzzles energy - and it's carbon footprint just keeps growing." Wired says "Today, each bitcoin transaction requires the same amount of energy used to power nine homes in the US for one day... The total energy use of this web of hardware is huge—an estimated 31 terawatt-hours per year. More than 150 individual countries in the world consume less energy annually. And that power-hungry network is currently increasing its energy use every day by about 450 gigawatt-hours, roughly the same amount of electricity the entire country of Haiti uses in a year." Because Stellar is based on a consensus algorithm rather than mining, it takes much less energy to run the Stellar network. The Poseidon Foundation decided to build their platform on Stellar rather than Ethereum or Bitcoin because of this (twitter source).
Lumens ICO tokens vs. Ethereum ICO tokens: According to Stellar.org, "traditionally, ICO tokens have been issued on the Ethereum network in the form of ERC20 tokens. ERC20 tokens are easy to issue and are infinitely customizable using Ethereum’s smart contracting language. However, recent events have highlighted and exacerbated some weaknesses of the network, including slow transaction processing times for the network during ICOs and increasingly expensive gas prices (by fiat standards) for transactions and smart contract execution. Moreover, many organizations require only basic tokens; they adopt the risk of Ethereum’s Turing complete programming language without taking advantage of many of its benefits."
"While Ethereum has the most expressive programming capabilities, we believe Stellar is the best choice for ICOs that do not require complex smart contracts. Stellar’s primary goal is to facilitate issuing and trading tokens, especially those tied to legal commitments by known organizations, such as claims on real-world assets or fiat currency."
Stellar vs. Ethereum #2: The median transaction time on Stellar is 5 seconds, compared to approximately 3.5 minutes on Ethereum (source). Stellar has a negligible transaction fee (.00001 XLM ~= $0.0000002) with no gas fee for computation, while depending on the complexity of the computation, the median cost for a transfer on the Ethereum network is $0.094. Security: While both Stellar and Ethereum run on a decentralized network, the Stellar network has fewer security pitfalls. Stellar uses atomic transactions comprised of simple, declarative operations while Ethereum uses turing complete programming capabilities which produces less auditable code and greater risk of exploitable vulnerabilities (source). Recently, a security flaw in the Ethereum network froze millions of dollars. According to Mobius ariticle written by David Gobaud, "On November 6, 2017, Github user deveps199 'accidentally' triggered a bug in Parity, a popular Ethereum mult-sig wallet, that froze more than $152 million in Ether across 151 addresses. The bug impacted several token sales including Polkadot, which has had ~$98 million out of its recent $145 million sale frozen."
"Mobius had none of its ongoing pre-sale Ether frozen because we do not trust Ethereum’s Smart Contract based multi-sig wallets given the vast Turing complete attack surface and did not use one. Security broadly is one of the main reasons the MOBI token that powers the DApp Store is a Stellar Protocol token and not an Ethereum token."
Lumens vs. Ripple: According to Wall Street Bitcoin Exchange, "Many investors like to compare the company [Stellar] to Ripple, and there are a lot of similarities, being that some of the founders worked on the Ripple team. In what can now be looked at as another blockchain development drama that plays out on chat boards and in interviews all across the globe. Stellar declared they fixed Ripple’s problems with their hard fork, however, Ripple has failed to admit to any of the flaws in its design that the Stellar team has pointed out." The article concludes by saying, "We Choose XLM Over XRP For 2018. That is why we are going with Stellar Lumens over Ripple in our portfolio for the rest of 2017 and 2018. After holding Ripple for a long time this year, it just never seems to make the big break like other names with bigger market caps like Bitcoin Cash, Dash, and Litecoin have. While we are holding on most all our larger market caps, we feel that Stellar Lumens will be one of the break out coins for 2018."
.
.
Conclusion
The stellar.org team is doing an amazing job making partnerships and pioneering the use of blockchain technology for various types of transactions. What we are seeing is a new technology that can actually be used to solve real-world problems. As a community, we need to continue supporting Stellar and we will quickly see it power transactions across the world. What are your thoughts about Stellar? What do you see in the future of Stellar? What are the advantages of digital cryptocurrency?

The world is becoming more and more economically unsafe.
“THE BLOCKCHAIN KEEPS EVERYONE HONEST, AND A WHOLE LAYER OF BANKING BUREAUCRACY IS REMOVED, LOWERING COSTS.” – PAUL VIGNA”
I am considering these five points are the pros of cryptocurrency.
Fraud:
Cryptocurerncies are digital and cannot be counterfeited or reversed arbitrarily by the sender, as with credit card charge-backs.
Identity Theft:
When you give your credit card to a merchant, you give him or her access to your full credit line, even if the transaction is for a small amount. Credit cards operate on a “pull” basis, where the store initiates the payment and pulls the designated amount from your account. Cryptocurrency use a “push” mechanism that allows the cryptocurrency holder to send exactly what he or she wants to the merchant or recipient with no further information
Read more on cryptocurrency on btcNewz.
Immediate Settlement:
Purchasing real property typically involves a number of third parties (Lawyers, Notary), delays, and payment of fees. In many ways, the bitcoin/cryptocurency blockchain is like a “large property rights database,” says Gallippi. Bitcoin contracts can be designed and enforced to eliminate or add third party approvals, reference external facts, or be completed at a future date or time for a fraction of the expense and time required to complete traditional asset transfers.
Access to Everyone:
There are approximately 2.2 billion individuals with access to the Internet or mobile phones who don’t currently have access to traditional exchange systems. These individuals are primed for the Crytocurrency market. Kenya’s M-PESA system, a mobile phone-based money transfer and micros financing service recently announced a bitcoin device, with one in three Kenyans now owning a bitcoin wallet. (Let me repeat that again. 1/3)
Lower Fees:
There aren’t usually transaction fees for cryptocurrency exchanges because the miners are compensated by the network (Side note: This is the case for now). Even though there’s no bitcoin/cryptocurrency transaction fee, many expect that most users will engage a third-party service, such as Coinbase, creating and maintaining their own bitcoin wallets. These services act like Paypal does for cash or credit card users, providing the online exchange system for bitcoin, and as such, they’re likely to charge fees. It’s interesting to note that Paypal does not accept or transfer bitcoins.

Some thoughts about Libra - The next big thing?

“Libra - a simple global currency and financial infrastructure that empowers billions of people to reinvent money and transform the global economy.”
A lot of buzzwords in one sentence. But this time it comes from a consortium of 20 companies that are the “Who is Who” of the digital economy, e.g.: eBay, Spotify, Uber, Vodafone, Booking.com, Facebook and on the financial side PayPal, Coinbase, MasterCard and Visa.
In this article I will give you my perspective about the Technology, the Economic & Social Impact and my view of the future of LibraCoin. What do you think?

Technology

Technically Libra is a permissioned distributed ledger with focus on scalability and executing financial transactions using the LibraCoin. The LibraCoin is a “stable coin” to reduce volatility, that is backed-up by real assets (Libra Reserve). Access to the ledger will be by a “custodial wallet” that simplifies user access and enables integration into other applications (paying e.g. via WhatsApp). Simplification is done by handing over the key management to the wallet provider (Calibra/Facebook). The overall design allows the implementation of Smart Contracts (called Module) to manager more complex transactions.
Currently the technical design documents describe only the core functions in detail with focus on financial transactions, the source code is published as OpenSource on GitHub.
Conclusion: The design assures that the Libra Association keeps the full control over each transaction on the platform. Technically the design looks smart and being tailored for the purpose of being a global currency. It still needs to prove its working and does not yet have the huge ecosystem and developer support of other Blockchain solutions like Ethereum and Bitcoin.

Economic & Social Impact

The Libra coin is controlled by a consortium (Libra Association), this is currently lead by Facebook and members with focus on digital and financial business. The technical set-up (permissioned ledger, custodial wallet) gives them the ability to change the “rules of the Libra coin” when the consortium members majority agrees.
With their combined market power, they will be able to push LibraCoins within their ecosystem (e.g. get a bonus at Spotify when paying with Libra) and this will impact the markets globally.
The impact finally depends on regional situation:
Conclusion: We could see “financial power” moving away from banks and governments into a consortium of organisations - the impact will differ per region. This explains the huge and diverse echo given by politicians and banks in the recent days.

Future Evolvement

The Libra Association is promising not to abuse its power and is planning to move from a permissioned into a permission-less ledger. They also promote the development of non-custodial wallets, that makes the user owner of the private key and hence the coins. Libra is set-up as Open Source, it will be possible (in the near future) for any SW developer to write its own Smart Contracts and develop new services based on Libra. The consortium promised to extend it members up to 1000 and to include non-profit organisation and technologists.
Conclusion: If this promise becomes reality, we are pretty close to the concept of a public, scalable and distributed Blockchain that is trusted and used by many people. This would really transform our global economy and change the way we do business and financial transactions.
But - the most interesting part at the moment is just a “promise”

What does Facebook really have in mind?

With all major players pushing their own payment-system (Google Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal….) and expanding their scope in connecting payment services with their platforms, Facebook had to take action! But - just starting with another “Facebook Pay” would not be successful.
Hence - right from the start, Facebook Coin must be different and they followed a logical approach:
Unfortunately, the last point is just a promise and nobody knows if the consortium will keep it, or - if this is just the “candy” to push Libra into the market as an alternative global payment system.
Looking at the members of the Libra Association and their current business model, you can easily come to your own conclusion.
LibraCoin is big due to market power of the Libra Association. Only the future will show if the consortium keeps their promise and Libra becomes a real game changer.

bitcoin is a western phenomenom

I need some comment karma so thought I would actually try to contribute something meaningful. We were all too focused on China as the leader driving bitcoin adoption however the news and events of the past few months clearly show that bitcoin, not surprisingly will initially be a western phenomenon. It is nice to fantasize about third world adoption however this is not going to happen any time soon. Adoption and innovation will come primarily from western countries as there is no legal mechanism in these democracies to ban it. We should be thankful that this is the case. Thoughts?

Dash Nigeria: new B2B leads from the Nerds Unite Conference 2019

Nerds Unite 2019 Conference tagged “Accelerating Digital Transformation,” was held on Friday, February 15, 2019, in Lagos, Nigeria. The event had more than 500 participants in attendance. Nerds Unite is known for the attendance of top businesses like Avanti, Techpoint Africa, GigaLayer, Infoware, Paga, Business Day, and lots more.
Nerds Unite is a gathering of professionals in Fintech, blockchain, and IT, from all over west Africa and the world at large. Since 2016, it has brought the global IT community together through conferences, exhibitions, breakout sessions and networking activities. On Friday, February 15, 2019, it held another conference in Lagos, Nigeria, to expose IT professionals to the latest technologies available for business and its applications for the Nigerian business landscape.
We focused on networking for Dash. By the end of the meeting, new Dash wallets were created and more professional relationships were developed to create new leads for business development in Nigeria.
One of the business leads that were created is integrating Dash into the GigaLayer platform. GigaLayer is an online platform that provides services in web hosting, domain name, and other related services. It aims to help businesses in Africa expanding their reach using the power of the internet, their tools and services which are specifically and carefully designed for achieving online success.Currently, GigaLayer accepts many payment options like the credit/debit cards, PayPal, Paga, KongaPay, GTBank direct payment, M-Pesa (in other African countries), and so on. More importantly, it integrates the use of cryptocurrencies on its platform, currently Bitcoin. On this year’s Nerds Unite meeting we reached consensus on integrating the Dash cryptocurrency into the GigaLayer platform, because it is a better payment option than Bitcoin. (https://imgur.com/a/SRVJOcX)
This is a big move towards the adoption of Dash cryptocurrency in Nigeria, and ultimately Africa. With the integration of the Dash cryptocurrency on the GigaLayer platform and other B2B platforms, Nigerians and Africans will be able to purchase domains, web hosting services, and many other services, using cryptocurrencies – Dash or Bitcoin.

A detailed simple guide for Pundi X in Spanish language.

Website; https://www.bitcobie.com/pundix/
Extracted from site below;
